Developed by a global team, including the 1% most published cerebral palsy (CP) authors, CPAdvance™ offers high quality, interactive learning on the range of interventions, theories and principles proven to improve the life trajectory of these very young children.
Built on two decades of research and innovation that have helped reduce the rate and severity of cerebral palsy by 40% in Australia, CPAdvance™ connects clinicians, educators and care leaders with proven, evidence-based insights that can be directly applied in practice.
More than learning, CPAdvance™ is part of a global movement to advance equity, excellence and inclusion in early intervention. This movement brings together clinicians, caregivers, families, researchers and educators who share a commitment to improving outcomes for children with cerebral palsy.
Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) is a centre of excellence in cerebral palsy research, care, and innovation – working in partnership with families, clinicians, researchers, and global collaborators to unlock possibilities and improve lives.
As the world’s largest cerebral palsy not-for-profit, with more than 2,560 employees, the organisation’s Research Institute has made a significant contribution to reducing the rate and severity of cerebral palsy in Australia by 40% over the last 20 years.
In addition, the Research Institute developed the guidelines for best-practice treatment and intervention which are now considered the global standard.
CPA is the founder and funder of the Global Clinical Trials Network, connecting researchers across continents to share data, prevent duplication, and accelerate clinical breakthroughs. Critical to this has been their support and mentorship of 14 cerebral palsy registers in low- and middle-income countries to improve early diagnosis, access to care, and research equity.
In addition to CPA’s funding of the Sydney University Chairs for Cerebral Palsy, Allied Health and Technology & Innovation, the organisation operates three Early Diagnosis Clinics.
Cerebral Palsy Alliance is the largest private funder of cerebral palsy research globally supporting collaborations between clinicians, researchers, universities and hospitals in more than 45 countries.
CPAdvance™ enables you learn from the most current global research and with it, enrich your expertise and career.
More than just learning, it’s being part of a movement towards a growing global community committed to equity, excellence, and inclusion.
This is your opportunity to be part of the bigger picture. A chance to share a bold vision: a future where nothing is impossible for people with cerebral palsy (CP) and similar conditions.
Professor Iona Novak AM
Chair of Allied Health, The University of Sydney | Co-founder, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute
Prof. Iona Novak is an internationally recognised leader in cerebral palsy research and innovation. She is Cerebral Palsy Alliance Chair of Allied Health at The University of Sydney, and co-founder of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Institute. A Fulbright Scholar, Professor Novak established Xcellerate, a US-Australia stem cell research consortium advancing regenerative therapies for cerebral palsy.
Ranked the second highest cerebral palsy expert globally by Expertscape, her work spans early diagnosis, effective interventions, and neurorehabilitation. She invented the evidence alert traffic light system to make research understandable for families, leads large-scale trials and implementation studies, and has helped shape clinical practice in over 32 countries.
Professor Novak was awarded the prestigious Elsass Foundation Research Prize in 2021. She is dedicated to translating research into life-changing care for children and families living with cerebral palsy around the world.
Professor Nadia Badawi AM
CP Alliance Chair of Cerebral Palsy Research, The University of Sydney. Medical Director and Co-Head, Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead
Professor Nadia Badawi AM is the CP Alliance Chair of Cerebral Palsy Research, The University of Sydney where she leads a team of 45 researchers working on Epidemiology, Prevention, Early Detection and Intervention as well as Assistive Technology and Regenerative Medicine. She is also the Medical Director and Co-Head, Grace Centre for Newborn Intensive Care, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
She is a world-renowned neonatologist and global leader in cerebral palsy research and newborn brain health and her research continues to drive clinical change in neonatal care, neurodevelopmental follow-up, and cerebral palsy prevention. Professor Badawi co-founded the Australian Cerebral Palsy Register and plays a leading role in global initiatives including the Global Low and Middle Income Country Register and the International CP Genomics Consortium. She has collaborated with others on prevention of cerebral palsy and in the last 20 years, Australia has seen a 40% reduction in the rate and severity of CP. She has championed early detection and intervention for babies with cerebral palsy.
Recognised as one of the world’s top CP researchers, she has secured more than $70 million in competitive and philanthropic funding, delivered more than 150 keynote presentations, and published extensively across neonatal care, neuroprotection, and early intervention. Appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2014, Professor Badawi is also one of the Australian Financial Review’s 100 Women of Influence, was a finalist in the NSW Premier’s Award for Public Service as well as a Finalist for 2026 NSW Australian of the Year. Through her visionary leadership, she continues to shape research, policy and clinical care to improve outcomes for children and families globally.
Adjunct Associate Professor Cathy Morgan
Principal Research Fellow and Program Lead, Early Detection & Intervention
Cathy Morgan has been a vital part of CPA for more than 20 years, driving forward critical research initiatives in Early Detection and Early Intervention (EDEI). Her work in this field has led to the implementation of more accurate tools in early diagnosis and evidence based early intervention strategies. Her work has transcended the research arena and is being applied in clinical settings both within Australia, and internationally. Her work on early detection of CP has led to earlier detection of CP in Australia in children as early as 3 months old. Cathy’s work has been informing clinical practice, crucial for improving long-term outcomes for children with cerebral palsy.
One of Cathy’s flagship roles is as a champion for the implementation of General Movements Assessment in all NICU’s across Australia. She led the establishment of the first Australian early diagnosis clinic. There are now three diagnostic clinics, all of which are run by CPA, diagnosing/caring for approximately 500 infants in the past five years.
Cathy has led a large early intervention Randomised Controlled Trial in infants with CP and is conducting an international longitudinal study of 1000 infants with CP.
Cerebral Palsy Alliance acknowledges an expert group of researchers and clinicians who have made significant contributions to the translation of research, the design of the learning experience and the authorship of the modules.
As researchers and specialist clinical practitioners, this group includes recognised authorities on infant early intervention, cerebral palsy and complex neuro movement disorders.
Our thanks go to Dr Lynda McNamara, Dr Jill Massey, Amy Jones, Judy Williamson, Dr Astrid Ferreira, Jane Berry, Rachelle Baldock, Dr Amanda Khamis, Leanne Davies, Jessica Gengaroli, Dr Ashleigh Hines, Naomi Hodder, Dr Johanna Korkalainen, Dr Michelle Jackman.
